Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Frank Fagan as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Mr. Fagan has dedicated himself to the betterment of his province as a volunteer, philanthropist, and business leader,” said the Prime Minister. “He is a community minded individual through and through, and I am confident that he will serve his province exceptionally as Lieutenant Governor.”
Mr. Fagan had a successful career in the telecommunications sector and was Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at Bell Aliant prior to his retirement in 2008. He is deeply involved in his community as a volunteer, leader and philanthropist with countless organizations, including the Health Care Foundation of St. John’s, Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame, and the Film Producers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition, Mr. Fagan is the founding member of the Literacy Foundation and the Newfoundland Chapter of the Telecom Pioneers of America. He has also been instrumental in integrating people with developmental disabilities into the workforce and the community. For his dedicated service, Mr. Fagan has received widespread recognition, including being appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2011.
Lieutenant Governors are appointed by His Excellency the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. They serve five-year terms, during which they act as their provinces’ vice-regal representatives.
Prime Minister Harper also took the opportunity to thank the Honourable John C. Crosbie for his dedicated service as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, which began in February 2008.
